TEHRAN (IQNA) – The 14th edition of Jordan’s international Quran competition for women got underway in the Arab country’s capital of Amman on Saturday evening.

Representatives from 50 countries are taking part in the Quranic event, including Iranian memorizer Roya Fazaeli.

The only category of the competition is memorization of the entire Holy Quran, according to Ad-Dostur website.

All of the contenders first take part in a preliminary test to decide their level of memorization. Those scoring 85 out of 100 points will qualify for the main round.

There, every contender is asked to recite from memory five different pages of the Quran.

She is then scored based on her performance. Sixty percent of the points are allocated for accuracy of memorization, 25 percent for observing the rules of Tajweed, 10 percent for observing the rules of Waqf and Ibtida, and five percent for Fasaha (eloquence).

Five of the contestants will be announced as the top winners at the end of the competition. The top winners should be among those scoring at least 85 points.

Before leaving Tehran for Amman, Fazaeli told IQNA she was ready to vie at the competition.

“Given that I have recently gone through two important Quranic competitions successfully, this level of preparedness can help me in this competition,” she said.

Fazaeli won the memorization category of Iran’s 45th National Holy Quran Competition back in January. This is her first experience at an international contest.

Due to the similarities between regulations of competitions in Arab countries, representatives of these states may have a higher chance for top ranks, she said, adding that however, results can also become “surprising”.

The men’s competitions in Jordan will be held on April 11-17. Ali Reza Sameri will represent Iran in the category of memorization of the entire Holy Quran.
